THE RACE BEGINS

The Kentucky Derby isn't the biggest race and gambling event of the season.  Corn planting is.  Ohio keeps getting rains flooding is delaying field work.  Iowa is getting a lot planted and Illinois is trying to catch up.  All are behind on normal planting progress.  Yes the farmers are in a race to plant as many acres as soon as ground conditions are dry enough.  Markets of all grains have fallen significantly as traders exit positions as the planters begin rolling, uncertainty of Greece economics, and projections of slowing exports.  As previous post covered look for demand to grow as buyers look at this lower price as an opportunity to cover some additional needs.  I talked to a feeder that has corn and soybean meal covered into 2012 and adding on each down cycle.
 ON MY FARM
I have one half of corn my planted and the next field needed this weather to dry a little more.  74 degrees and sunny does a lot.  Tomorrow we will be going again.  I increased the number of seeds of corn planted per acre to 37,500 the additional cost is $9.00 per acre and I will need an additional 1.5 bushel of corn per acre to make that decision pay for its self.  I had planted that amount in the past but when seed corn prices increased an grain prices were under $4.00 I lowered my population to save expenses.  Soil temps. are lower than normal and the corn that has been planted is off to a slow germination.
  OTHER NEWS
The ethanol blenders credit of 45 cents a gal. is about to be lowered to 20 cents a gal.  This seem to be a compromise that everyone should endorse.  ( from previous  March 11th post )
  GARDEN
The local nursery was busy as possible, Mothers Day must be the day to buy flowers and plants.  My potatoes are visibly out of the ground, bought some more seeds and plants that will be planted next Sunday.
