crop conditions and progress

Corn planting in Ohio went from 11% complete to 60% complete in the last 2 weeks.  They are way behind normal progress but thank God they got a break in the weather.  Trying to put myself in their shoes, it is a real stressful situation and they will try to complete their plantings this week.  These late plantings will not have the maximum yield potential, cost more to harvest, and require more work to control the weeds that got growth prior to ground work beginning.  Insurance coverage begins to lower as this week begins but I think the Ohio farmers will continue to plant and get to 90% corn planted with a few more acres of beans replacing corn by week end.  It is amazing how much can be planted once rains stop.
Although I had finished planting before, the extra rain that fell will mean that I need to replant some corn and hope that it grows well enough to produce a crop even if it is half of normal.  Some of my corn is yellow from water stress and will take a few weeks of good weather to recover.  My soybeans look better and a good number of plants per acre in all fields.
Markets are lower today as they see planting coming to an end.  The next flood, dry spell, or unknown will get the grain trade nervous again as supplies are tight and depend on a good crop this year.  The fall prices are still high enough that it would be hard for any farmer not to do everything possible to get his crop planted and cared for.
A couple form the Somonauk Area project just left for Kenya to learn first hand of the successes and challenges of our overseas projects.  They will visit 4 separate projects while there.  It will be interesting to learn from them all the great things we can do by working together in support of ending world hunger and helping farmers world wide feed their villages.
Get your garden planted and see first hand how much produce you can grow.  Remember to share your bounty with your neighbors and food pantry.
