The joint Foods Resource Bank Harvest Celebration of the Somonauk and Earlville Area Growing Projects will be held on Saturday, October 16, 2010 at the farm of the Gary Dau family. Directions: Route 34 into Somonauk. Turn south on Gage Street (Bud's Citgo station is on the northwest corner of this intersection.) Follow this out of town to 42nd Road ( 6.4 miles from Route 34). Turn west (right) on 42nd road. The Dau farm is .6 miles from the corner--the first farm on the south (left).
The day begins with an ecumenical worship service at 10:00 a.m. Join us for an inspirational and fun-filled day with activities and demonstrations for the entire family. Tentative list of activities/demonstrations include: beef feedlot demonstration, sheep shearing, cider pressing, soap making, pedal tractor races and pulls for kids, combine rides, pumpkin carving, and more. Lunch consisting of hamburgers and pork from a whole hog roast will be available for a free will offering.
29 farm partners, 20 cooperating churches, and lots of friends of FRB will be sitting down together. This is reminiscent of a generation ago when farming was more labor intensive and the neighborhood would join together to bring the crops in for each other and sit down for fellowship and a meal. When we meet this year we will see first hand how farming has changed to allow one man to harvest Gods gifts by himself. But just how the times have changed for the farmer it has also changed for the world. Today's technology allows us to sit down with our neighbors worldwide with our harvest and caring. We will be at the farm of Gary Dau representing all of American Agriculture and the FRB. Our neighbors are all of the hungry people of the world. By ourselves it would be difficult to minister to the needs of them but as a group what we can achieve is limitless.
This year has been one of struggles with the frequent spring and summer rains. The crops are not yielding as much as we had anticipated when they were planted. They are taking advantage of the warm and sunny fall and dried down ahead of schedule. My corn is only slightly better than last year which was well below average. I am 1/3 done with corn harvest and the forecast is sunny and dry for all week so my soybeans should be done by mid week. Our struggles are minor compared to the world and we are thankful for what we are given. We are glad to pass these blessings on to aid those less fortunate.
