What a difference a year makes!

What a difference a year makes!
Last year was a real struggle to get the grain dry enough to harvest and this year we are way ahead of schedule.  When you join us at the harvest fest the majority of the fields will be harvested compared to none at the same time last year.  This week has been warm and breezy that has allowed for great conditions to lower the moisture levels of corn.  To store corn it needs to be about 15% moisture and if the levels in the field are higher than that the farmer needs to either wait or harvest and dry it to the proper level.  Last year my drying costs were 8 times higher than normal and I am estimating costs at 1/3 of normal this year.
The grain markets have set new highs this week again with reports of lower yields here and overseas.
Ready for the harvest fest?  Then join us at the Gary Dau farm 7 miles south of Somonauk on Hoxsey to 42nd road and turn west to the first farm.  October 16th at 10:00 lasting until mid afternoon.  There are planed activities for all ages.
For those that have not meet me in person I have included the picture of my family (I'm the old guy in the back).  This is a real family farm and they have all contributed in many ways.  The same is true for all of the other FRB farmer partners in our growing project.  In fact most of the production in the country comes from family farms.  You will have the opportunity to meet with some of us at the harvest fest.  Again our main goal is to support FRB in world hunger projects and at the same time try to show all of our other partners what farming is about.  Please ask us questions.  We are taking the day off at the busiest time of the year to make your day more entertaining and informing.  Bring some friends and show them what FRB is about.
