Dear FRB. partners:
The corn is drying down fast due to warm weather and some leaf diseases. Some fields are being harvested in the area already. I plan on combining my corn beginning Sept. 27th and Delmonte should be getting my Lima beans that week also. My soybeans are looking good with no leaf diseases present, I hope to have them done by Oct. 14th. I planted the soybeans April 27 when the ground was working up real nice and I think that is why they look so healthy now. I have ordered wheat seed and will plant 50 acres as soon as I get a field harvested and corn stalks baled ( I use corn residue for hog bedding ). The early yield reports are showing lower yields than the USDA estimates, the wet spring limited some corn development and the hot summer appears to have reduced the number of kernels per ear as well as the size of each kernel. We will have to wait till harvest is complete to see if all areas are lower. The grain markets have been going higher on that information as well as larger exports. I sold the majority of my soybean production last month for a good but lower price. Marketing grain has no guarantees and the best plan is to review your costs and cash flow needs to determine selling prices and dates. I did not want to take the risk of lower prices to sell later when I would need to pay some loans in December.
The Somonauk/Earlville Growing Projects Harvest Celebration will take place on Saturday, October 16 at the farm of Gary and Jean Dau in rural Sheridan. Complete directions will follow in the next post. Worship will begin at 10:00 a.m. For those that have not been to one of these plan on a great multidenominational church service, pig roast, activities, and fun lasting to mid afternoon. We will be raising more money for hunger projects.
I am trying to transmitt this to reach all interested in the farmers side of FRB. You can click on the follow tab under the family picture to get alerts to new posts. You can also find the blog at http://www.foodresurcebank.blogspot.com/ set to your favorites and check back 2x per month for my updates.
