Corn is amazing or make that aMAIZEing

Corn growth this week

last week July 6th corn was 5 foot today on July 13 corn is 6 foot 9 inches

Last week the growing point was at 42 inches and 6 leaves down.  Today growing point is at 66 inches and one leaf down.

The May 20th post I had asked you to pray that we do not get the hot temperatures when the corn would pollinate on the week of July 20th.  It look s very favorable in the forecast for that week.  On July 15th expect to see most fields with tassels showing and pollination beginning on the 20th.

The question still remains on what our harvested acres will be.  With the shortage of forage for livestock and late planted corn more acres than usual will be chopped and not harvested for grain.  I also expect some downward revision in planted acres in Iowa and Minnesota.

To update on last week post:  The weather could not have been better for the corn and it's growth.  We had some rain earlier, warm sunny days, and cooler nights.  The corn will develop fast in this next week also.  Research has shown that the cool nights around 60 degrees have a huge impact on plant development and health.  We have an excellent plant as of now to build a ear of corn.  The ear has already began to develop and as mentioned will be pollinating soon.  I will keep you updated.
