July 2nd corn 4 foot
July 6th corn 5 foot tall
These pictures show how fast the corn is growing this past few weeks and it has grown a foot a week measuring 3 foot on June 24, 5 foot on July 2, and 5 foot on July 6th. If you stand in this corn field an acre would be 117 feet in all directions (your acre) and would have 36,000 plants. each plant is growing and pushing these leaves out to the light and then they unfurl and open to the leaves you are used to seeing. Once out they remain the same height. The next leaf needs to push past that one and so on. On a warm humid day this corn is putting out a new leaf in a day. That means 36,000 leaves opening up. So the saying about hearing corn grow is this process. You can call this Gods Choir of Corn.
Remember that picture above of 6 more leaves and I will show you when the last one is out and the tassel showing.
My field (and your corn acre) are looking great. The USDA reports that we have gotten the corn planted that we were trying for. I think these acres will be revised downward. There is a line from St Louis Illinois through parts of Missouri and covers many acres in Northwest Iowa and South west Minnesota that remained wet all spring. These farmers were returning seed corn, They do not need to report planted acres until July 15 and these numbers are not used until the September.
